After we’d recovered sufficiently from our Volcan Acatenango hike, we used Viator to hire a tour guide to take us to  LakeLake Atitlan Atitlan, a stunningly beautiful lake located in the highlands of Guatemala. With its crystal-clear blue waters surrounded by towering volcanoes and quaint villages, it is no wonder that it has become a popular destination for travelers from all around the world.

One of the most fascinating things about Lake Atitlan is its unique formation. The lake is actually a volcanic crater that was formed over 85,000 years ago. The three volcanoes that surround the lake – Atitlan, San Pedro, and Toliman – are still active and add to the breathtaking views of the area. The lake is located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala and is situated at an elevation of over 5,000 feet.

Visitors to Lake Atitlan can explore the many small villages that dot the shores of the lake. Each village has its own unique character and offers visitors a glimpse into the local Mayan culture. Some of the most popular villages to visit include San Juan la Laguna, San Pedro la Laguna, and Santiago Atitlan.

San Pedro la LagunaSan Juan la Laguna is a small village located on the western shore of the lake. The village is known for its beautiful murals and textiles. Visitors can take a walking tour of the village and learn about the traditional Mayan weaving techniques that are still used today.

San Pedro la Laguna is another popular village located on the southern shore of the lake. We spent a couple of hours here, watching presentations on their homeopathic medicines and tapestry. This village is also known for its vibrant nightlife and outdoor activities. Visitors can go hiking, kayaking, and swimming in the lake, or take a yoga class in one of the many studios in the area.

Santiago Atitlan is a larger village located on the southwestern shore of the lake. This village is known for its vibrant markets and traditional Mayan ceremonies.

For those looking for a more adventurous experience, there are many hiking trails that offer stunning views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. The San Pedro Volcano is a popular destination for hikers, as it offers panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding area. It may or may not be on our list for future adventures!

In addition to the natural beauty and cultural experiences, Lake Atitlan is also known for its delicious food. You can sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales, chiles rellenos, and pepian. There are also many international restaurants in the area that offer a wide variety of cuisine.
